IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Over the next few years you will notice some changes to instruction and testing that will impact your child. The Rhode Island Department of Education has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which are a national set of learning expectations for college and career success. Rhode Island is one of 46 states, including all the New England states, that have adopted CCSS.

While there are many similarities between the existing state standards and the CCSS, you may notice changes in what content is emphasized and the grade in which the content is taught. There is increased emphasis on the following:

  1. Reading more informational and complex text
  2. Writing to justify thinking and reasoning and writing for more authentic purposes
  3. Engaging in more problem solving and problem based learning
  4. Mathematical understanding and procedural skills
  5. Assessing learning at higher levels
  6. Demonstrating skills independently in presentations and writing
  7. Making more real world, relevant connections

The purpose of adopting CCSS is not simply to align with other states, but rather to raise the bar in all grades to ensure that our students are receiving a relevant and rigorous education. Today’s global economy means that our students need to possess academic standards by the completion of twelfth grade to ensure their success in college and/or the workforce.

If you have any questions regarding CCSS, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Stephen Prew

The PTA at RMS subsidizes the yearly student planners and yearly Scholastic Book Fair.  We sponsor the Annual Craft Fair.  In addition, we are able to provide limited funding to offset the expense of field trips and help supplement materials and programs for the students at RMS.

Please support us by becoming a member!  It is also important to support our Fall Fundraiser.  The money we earn goes to support the above activities.

RMS PARTICIPATES IN REWARDS PROGRAMS - PLEASE JOIN US!!!
Riverside Middle School participates in the A+ School Rewards Program. Please support our school by registering your Stop and Shop cards.

With A+ School Rewards, points accrue with each purchase where the Stop & Shop Card is used. It even works with purchases made online with Peapod by Stop & Shop. At the end of each month, these points determine your school's cash total which is automatically credited to its account and school totals updated each month. (Please note: Gift cards (excluding store brand gift cards), pharmacy, alcohol and/or cigarette purchases are excluded from accruing points.)

A+ School Rewards are rounded per transaction to the nearest whole dollar amount. At the end of each month, each school's dollar amount is determined which is then automatically credited to its account.

We also collect Box Tops for Education.  They can be dropped off in the main office.
